Is Offshore Drilling a Sin unto Death?

John 11:35 says, “Jesus wept.” I once knew an oil man, as tough as steel, who slammed his fist when I asked him if he approved of offshore drilling, then he shouted, “We have no business out there, we could kill all life in the oceans!”

That was only one of two times in my life I ever heard that wise man, my father, weep but we should be weeping too and sending letters to our president, our representatives, senators and the EPA asking them to end all offshore drilling! Please take the time to contact them! There are many environmental disasters described in the bible during this transitional time called “the end of the age.” Some of them are from events like hail, earthquakes and volcanic eruption but many of the others are preventable if man would only begin to care for the creation to the degree and effectiveness that humanity was created to perform.

Could it be that because of our busy lifestyles, and with some, the love of money which is the root of evil, we haven’t understood the gravity of offshore drilling? Far greater authority than any engineering expert or statistical analyst has made it so clear there can be no justification! Our government would never place a bomb factory in a grade school because the danger, the risk to the children would be simply too enormous…so much so that it would seem like insanity! It is just as insensitive and insane to continue offshore drilling. The smallest price we will pay if we continue is the extinction of all whales, porpoises, and dolphins throughout the Oceans. The maximum amounts to the end of any sort of animal life in the sea. The Bible says, “There is a sin unto death.” I am not saying that this scripture is referring to the sin (sin means an error with repercussions) of offshore drilling, but it is a huge error in judgment and character which does expose great creatures, with great souls, and incredible minds to death for their crime of blessing the Planet!

Most educators say we learn best by repetition so I am going to repeat this scriptural warning twice, once now and once at the end of this admonition. Revelation 16:3c “…and every living soul died in the sea.” The word soul translated from the original Greek means life forms which have breath or spirit or heart. This sounds like all life forms and can easily be construed to mean that, but it specifically refers to those creatures which breathe voluntarily. We human beings breathe involuntarily; therefore this is not talking about human souls. When we are speaking of voluntary breathers the focus is on whales and dolphins. The man who trained Flipper and now is an activist to save dolphins and whales once had a dolphin look him in the eyes, stop breathing and dive to the bottom. Through that process it chose to make its transition into eternity. What I am reiterating is that probably Revelation 16:3c means that everything in the oceans died but specifically the great whales, porpoises and dolphins. All of them!

There are few animals relatively speaking that God explicitly mentions by name in the scriptures. In Genesis 1:21 we see an example of God speaking generally of many species but specifically about whales. “And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind…and God saw that it was good.” Cetaceans, the scientific term for whales, porpoises and dolphins, have great cognitive capabilities, communication skills and self-awareness. Sperm whales have the largest brain of any living animal!

Encephalization Quotient is the term used to compare body weight to brain size. Horses have a .86, cats have a 1.00 and dogs 1.18, elephants 1.88, but bottle-nosed dolphins come in at a whopping 5.80. Bottle-nosed dolphins have a greater brain size than humans and are four times as intelligent as chimpanzees.

No comment on the brain size of politician’s, CEO’s or investors who do not factor in the cost of sustainability or living on a planet understandably preparing to vomit out its inhabitants. (See Leviticus 18:25.) I do know that unless the deep water horizon oil rig can be plugged by closing any remaining valve, it will take at least two to three months to prevent an environmental catastrophe. During that time at its current daily release of 42,000 gallons of crude oil, that could easily mean 3,780,000 gallons of oil will flow into the Gulf of Mexico. Such a solution, if possible, would involve the most modern technology whereby drilling a relief well would be necessitated. The spill is nowhere near as bad as it could become. The blowout preventer, according to a spokesperson, must be restraining the spill or it would be a lot worse.

Skimmers will be removing some of the oil from the current spill area of 600 square miles and growing. Dispersants will facilitate the dissolving of remaining oils back into the water column where bacteria hopefully can transform part of it into carbon dioxide. You remember… that’s the stuff that is causing climate change according to many experts.

I want to conclude this admonition by restating the position of this ministry just in case some lunatic would misunderstand my words. I and anyone assisting this ministry must be committed to non-violence. Jesus only gave two commands to soldiers: “Be content with your wages and do violence to no one.” (Luke 3:14) God says, “Vengeance is mine and I will repay saith the Lord.” (Romans 12:19)

Everyone needs to know what time it is. Revelation 11:18 describes the current hour and when you read it you will see the similarities. For time sake here I will only quote a small part of verse 18 which says, “God should destroy all those who destroy the earth.” I and no one I would share a cup of water with want to see anyone hurt or lost in an industrial accident, lose a job or even to feel degraded in any way. When God specifically says, “every living soul in the sea died” we already ascertain that this means at a minimum the voluntary breathers such as whales, porpoises and dolphins. The root word for soul in that scripture means having heart, breath, spirit, or life. What I do hope for is that everyone engaged in deep sea and offshore drilling would at least come up to that standard. Surely no one can say “drilling is my profession and therefore let the whales and dolphins go to hell,” when millions of children in many parts of the world are dying because they have no source of clean drinking water. Everybody that follows Christ is called to suffer with Him. You may need to take that cut in pay and do what Jesus did, He went about doing good. (Acts 10:38)

No matter who you are do not close your heart as some have done to their own destruction. Paul addresses this in Ephesians 4:17-19, “This I say therefore and testify in the Lord that ye hence forth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the blindness of their heart: who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

Please contact the President, your senators and representatives and the EPA or at least one of those. Tell them that we the people do not want offshore drilling. Also remind them that continuing to expose a vast number of species in our seas to environmental calamity violates the very purpose of humankind. Be sure to include the warning of Revelation 11:18 and pray that this current spill will be swiftly contained and terminated before it does irreparable harm. And remember dolphins and whales are creatures with hearts and minds and God is looking at your heart. (1Samuel 16:7)
